PHI BULANI REMEMBERS WILLIAM HUTT

*

"We first crossed paths at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario. I had just seen him in A.R. Gurney's The Dining Room. He had this wonderful aura of calm, and i was wound tighter than a drum, i was really just cutting my teeth in the Theatre. Subsequently, we would share an elevator ride backstage, as i remember we shared a stage entrance that timed out around the same time- only we were in different productions. Two differing prescences- locked in an elevator, his; a monarchy of calm, mine; a bundle of energy looking to fray. In these short transports, Bill, as i came to call him, was curious- curious about what role i was doing, what was the play, and how did i distinguish the character from myself? All this in these short little elevator rides to our respective stage entrances. As I look back i realize he was attempting to help me redirect my nervous energy, by asking these curiousities of me. So i feel compelled to echo Richard Monette's sentiments that he was extremely generous with younger actors'. I feel honoured to have shared these rare moments with him."
