THIS IS PHI BULANI
Whazzup with PHI? Part 1
Noph: So PHI it's William Shakespeare's Birthday. Happy Birthday Wil!
PHI: Yeahhhh, happy birthday to Wil.
Noph: So, my first question is; How's the Hamlet coming along, i think it was about a year ago that you began "working with the text".
PHI: Actually, Nophi we don't know his actual birthday, we know he was baptised on April 26th, and it was the custom of the times to have that celebration/ritual what have you- 3 days after being born.
Noph: Why are you avoiding the question??
PHI: I'm not... just stalling cause i'm not sure how i want to answer you.
Noph: Uh huh.
PHI: Seriously though, you should probably be asking Jude Law! [Or Ben Carlson.]
Noph: Is that bitterness?
PHI: No- that's one of the seven deadlies- Really... I am just stalling-
Noph: -OK, so next question.
Noph: I know The Gospel Of PHI is going to Cannes. Are you going to Cannes? [And am i pronouncing it correctly?]
PHI: Caught me on both? Dunno know.
Noph: Does PHI not want to play today??
PHI: Cute - I am intensely thinking about travelling to Cannes. I have certain contractual obligations that are pending and that may prevent my going. At the end of day, there's only so much time in the day... you know-. As for the correct pronunciation of Cannes, i think it's kind of a fi'ty fi'ty split. Personally, i pronounce it a little like i imagine Captain Kirk would- so i say "Kahn"-
Noph: With a slight declention of the palate.
PHI: -pause-no response-smiles-
Noph: C'mon i've heard you say stuff like that-
PHI: Sure- OK- palatiale declentionne- that thing you just said, rather than "can"... I've also heard "Cans" Which could be correct as well- but to my mind, that sounds less exotic-
Noph:- unless ofcourse your talking about the toplesss beaches.

PHI: Ha! [lol] oh yeah honey chile- The thing is Nophi, is that there's only so much memory space you know 24 hours a day-
Noph: This sounds like one of your infamous theories-
PHI: Well sort of, we have 24 hours in a day, during which time our minds our functioning, remembering, performing, creating, etc. That memory space is precious. Concentrated efforts create certain paths-
Noph: [snore]
PHI: - to the palatial palate [ahem]- As far Hamlet goes, I'm a third committed, and i'm not even cast to play him... hah! Since my first bold into the fore with Hamlet last year, i've learned a cart load of chorale music, lately i'm learning the tenor part for the Poulenc "Gloria". Which we perform with full orchestra on Friday, May 2nd/ 2008... it's part of the SCO Majestic Pipes concert.
Noph: Majestic Pipes huh- leave it to you, to be part of a concert that s called "Majestic Pipes"
PHI: [Throaty Laugh]
Noph: Any solos?
PHI: Not unless i stick one in!
Noph: [lol]
PHI: There is actually an unclaimed tenor solo, i could jump on that - they wouldn't know what hit them it'd be like where did that come from, the conductor be looking at me- with a "what the-?" look on his face... hah! tempting. Seriously though it promises to be an incredible night of music. The Venus movement of the Holst Planets composition will be heard as well.
Noph: Of course with you, it'd have to be Venus.
PHI: [Throaty laugh] Well you know, all depends how you wera it-which way you dress- ...so... that's going to be an exciting concert-
Noph: When does "Discovering Elvis" go up?
PHI: Mid June- get you- "Go Up?"
Noph: Guess your rubbing off on me-
PHI: mmm [throaty laugh]
PHI: Uh huh huh, yeah, it's gonna feel like one of Elvis' movies, as i read it, it's a kinda madcap, it's a fun evening out. Opens July 1st, Victoria Playhouse, Petrolia, Onatario.
Part two of this interview next week-
